MISSION: The objectives of the Cass County Vector Control program are to control nuisance mosquitoes, reduce the potential of mosquito borne disease transmission, and provide a comfortable and healthy atmosphere for community residents. We accomplish this task by using an Integrated Pest Management plan of attack. Integrated pest management is the combining of appropriate pest control tactics into a single strategy to reduce pests to an acceptable level. Using many different tactics to control a pest problem tends to cause the least disruption to the living organisms surrounding the treatment site. The Cass County Vector Control District is the community group in charge of making decisions about issues impacting the county with regards to vectors, which are organisms capable of transmitting disease. The Vector Control daily activities involves mosquito control, mosquito testing and trap counts as well as community spraying and notifications. The Vector Control District is important to the community/county in the prevention of the spread of disease and plants or animals that might carry such diseases.
In 1988 the Cass County Vector Control District was established to control mosquitoes capable of carrying diseases. The district includes the Cities and rural areas within Cass County. The District operates under the control of a three member board appointed by the County Commission. The Vector Director is responsible for the daily activities of the District.
Mosquito control is the method used to reduce mosquito populations. We are called mosquito "control" because all we or anyone can do is control mosquitoes. Throughout the year our field aides monitor and treat approximately 11,000 acres of standing water within the county. That area grows as we continually add breeding areas to our maps.
