Birch P. Burdick
State's Attorney

The State's Attorney is an elected official in Cass County. He is responsible for prosecuting all criminal matters, as well as juvenile delinquencies, child deprivations and parental termination; providing legal service to county departments; representing petitioners in mental health commitments; administration and policy functions of the State's Attorney’s office; and provide guidance and training to law enforcement agencies within Cass County.

Birch P. Burdick won the 1998 election for Cass County State's Attorney and took office on January 4, 1999. Prior to his election, Burdick was a member of Fargo law firm practicing in both general civil law and criminal defense. Prior to that time, Burdick prosecuted cases with the Minneapolis City Attorney's office.

Prior to obtaining his law degree, Burdick was a mechanical/nuclear engineer who worked with the Bechtel Power Corporation and Florida Power & Light in the design, construction and operation of nuclear electrical generating stations.

Burdick was born and raised in Fargo. He received his engineering degree from the University of Michigan and his law degree from Hamline School of Law. Burdick and his wife, Jo, live in Fargo.
